Thanks all round to the helpers, all of whom helped generously and in good spirits and who carried me along with their usual expertise. The weather made the day, and there seemed to be plenty of favourable comments about the courses.
Helen O'Neil
Planner
With the British Night championships in 2 weeks time, It was good to
wonder round Sherwood Forest in the dark putting out SI boxes on the
morning of the event although I had the advantage of having visited
the sites several times before.
This was my first go at planning a
regional event and it was certainly a step up from a C4 and I'd like
to express my thanks to Ian and Monika Cooper. It was a learning experience and
Ian's experience was invaluable in pointing out weaknesses with my
courses which I had not noticed and hopefully I was able to improve
them as a result of his advice.
It was a joy to plan in the 4 or 5
different types of terrain and I hope that you enjoyed the different
challenges which it brought. I know that those of you who visited the
old oaks area in Bilhough felt that it was the best part of the area
I'm only sorry that more of you did not have the opportunity of
running in it.
Planning was made more interesting by a constantly changing map as it
was updated and features were added or moved with the final revision
taking place on the day that it went to be printed. I know that in an
area like this a lot of the surveying can only be done in the late
Autumn and Winter once the bracken is down and Alan Beardsley put a
lot of effort into getting it right for the event.
The information
that a group of badger sets originally thought to have been abandoned
were in fact occupied meant the loss of 3 control sites and some hasty
replanning less than a month before the event. Finally I'd like to
thank Andrew Llewellyn for his help over the week end in putting out
controls for much of Saturday and meeting up with me before 6 am on
the Sunday to help put out the boxes before going on to team lead the
car parking.
Jim Clarke
Controller
I'll keep this short. Thank you all for coming, and bringing the weather
with you. It was a glorious day at Budby particularly at 0700 hours, and
many people offered their thanks to the planner. It was a steep learning
curve for Jim Clarke, with personal circumstances affecting his
availability, but hopefully will stand him in good stead in future.
Apologies to those affected at control 135. An old planning tag, clearly
stating 135, was on an ummapped 1 foot high 'knoll' some 25/30 metres NW of
the actual control kite, which was on the correct 1 metre high knoll as
shown on the map. I decided therefore to reinstate all competitors who did
not punch at 135 as it appears some people saw the tag and then carried on
with their courses.
Apologies also to those yellow course competitors who may have been
affected by someone relocating a control kIte into a tree.
Thanks also to Monika for her help and advice.
